The biggest social media contracts awarded this year
New Delhi: The biggest contract awarded to a telecom company this year is a $5.4-billion contract to provide mobile-phone services in the country.
The telecom company is Alltel Ltd, a joint venture between telecom firms Bharti Airtel, Bhartiani Telecom, Bharat Forge, Infosys and Vodafone India.
Alltel is one of the world’s biggest mobile operators, providing about 30% of all mobile users in the world.
It also provides high-speed broadband, mobile-telecom data connectivity and voice and data messaging services.
It is part of the new Indian telecom regulator Reliance Jio Infocomm, which has been set up by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to roll out affordable mobile phone services.
The contract was awarded by the telecom regulator in March this year.
The government had set aside Rs 1,000 crore to finance the rollout of the service.
The company, which will have access to all the major data networks, said in a statement that the launch of its services in 2019 was a milestone for India’s digital economy.
The launch of the services will provide customers with the best possible services and enhance their mobile communications, Alltel said.
The move comes as the government has also set aside a whopping Rs 1 lakh crore for the next five years to invest in digital infrastructure, the company said.
All telcos have been vying for this role as the sector has been growing at an annual pace and has been gaining market share in the telecom industry.
The government is trying to increase connectivity across the country, especially in rural areas.
In October, the government had launched a pilot project to improve the connectivity of rural areas through the National Rural Communications Mission.
